The first step of a self-study is examining one’s mission statement and re-writing it to reflect the current community.
This video “How to Write a Mission Statement that Doesn’t Suck” (I apologize fro the crassness of the title) is a great place to start.

I heard a presentation that used “Where the Hell is Matt” as a demonstration of an effective (living) mission statement. Matt wants to dance in exotic places. He wants people to dance with him. That’s it. And he’s pretty good at it in 2008:
And again in 2012.
The videos capture an effective enacted mission statement. After all, we’re not re-writing (or creating) mission statements in order to give ourselves more work. We’re trying to articulate who we are and communicate to ourselves and to our communities what we hope to become.
